APEC: Korea Shares Policies for Higher Efficiency and Stability of Food Supply Chain
Sejong, 19 August 2024 — On 17–18 August 2024, at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting held in the city of Trujillo in the Republic of Peru, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea exchanged its views on food security cooperation of the Asia-Pacific region. The MAFRA also requested that APEC members give their full support and cooperation for the next ministerial meeting to be held in South Korea in 2025.
The major agenda at the meeting was prevention and reduction of the loss and waste of agri-food products occurring in the entire process of a food supply chain. In this aspect, the Republic of Korea (ROK) shared its policies for brining greater efficiency and stability to a supply chain of agri-food products. Such policies include increasing the number of disaster prevention facilities and smart farms, expanding support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, etc. The ROK also expressed its will to play a pivotal role in food security cooperation among APEC members by taking advantage of such policy achievements.
Director-General Chong Hairyon of the International Cooperation Bureau of the MAFRA said: “APEC members at the ministerial meeting showed a strong will and passion for strengthening food security. We will put their strong will and passion into our efforts to prepare the 10th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting to be held in South Korea in August next year. And we will turn that into an opportunity to contribute to the international community.”
Director-General Chong Hairyon added, “It would be highly appreciated if APEC members keep their interest in the next year’s APEC meeting and cooperate with us for the success of the meeting.”
