Sejong, 22 November 2024— The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) will hold an event to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Kimchi Day in Samcheonggak, a traditional arts and cultural complex in Seoul, on 22 November 2024.
Kimchi Day, enacted as a national anniversary in South Korea in 2020, presents diverse events such as a celebration event, an award ceremony, and special performances. A kimchi-making event will also be held in celebration of Kimchi Day.
Other side events include an exhibition of kimchi-based products and kimchi, a tasting event, and a conference attended by chef Fabrizio Ferrari and experts to share their insights on kimchi.
Importantly, 22 November has been officially designated as Kimchi Day in four countries, including the U.S. and the U.K. Also, on 31 October 2024, exports of kimchi-based products and kimchi reached USD 134.7 million, up by 3.1% from a year earlier, with a growing global popularity of kimchi on the Korean wave (hallyu).
Minister Song Miryung of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said: “Recently, inside and outside South Korea, there have been remarkable growth and changes in the kimchi industry. The MAFRA will provide full support for the kimchi industry to grow into a sustainable industry. And we will work harder to ensure that a Korean culture of sharing and community can reach many people more widely around the world through kimchi.”
