The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Chung Hwang-keun, MAFRA) will begin its communication with the private sector to further spread the global popularity of "Hansik" or Korean cuisine in the world.
Korean Food has become a major content* representing "Hallyu," or Korean Wave, thanks to the public and private sectors' efforts to promote Korean food and the popularity of the culture of the Republic of Korea. Last year, export volume of Korean agricultural and fisheries food products hit an all-time high of 12 billion dollars, demonstrating the increasing industrial value of the spread of Korean food.
* Survey of Hallyu in overseas countries in 2023 (Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange): Most popular Korean cultural content (K-Food 49.1%, K-beauty 46.5%, etc.) < 9 consecutive years> / Second image that comes to mind when thinking of Korea (K-pop 14.3%, K-Food 13.2%) <5 consecutive years>
In line with such an elevated global status of Hansik, MAFRA plans to announce the "Strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean cuisine" within this year by establishing a consultative body consisting of experts from various areas of the private sector during this month, while promoting the spread of Korean food's popularity by visiting sites as a relay.
As the first step, Minister Chung Hwang-keun will attend the inauguration ceremony of the social contribution project of CJ Cheiljedang entitled 「Cuisine.K*」on May 2 and conclude the inter-organization agreement to nurture talents and professionals of Hansik or Korean cuisine.
* Mid-to-long term social contribution project to nurture talents of Korean cuisine with global competitiveness and to implement programs to spread Korean culinary culture for the development and globalization of Hansik or Korean cuisine.
Through the meeting with Hansik young chefs, the Minister will listen to the opinions of people on the field and encourage rising stars of Hansik, in order to extend the global popularity of Korean food and to nurture qualified personnel.
Minister Chung Hwang-keun will reiterate by saying, "The spread of Hansik or Korean cuisine in countries around the world is an excellent opportunity to improve competitiveness of the Korean agri-food industry as a whole and to increase export. The agreement concluded today to nurture the young chefs will contribute to accelerating the spread of Korean food. MAFRA will visit anywhere which is trying to spread Hasik to the world and join the efforts."
MAFRA will continue its follow-up efforts to further spread Hansik by visiting the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and private companies which are preparing its commercialization.
